Whilst at MARU, founding directors, Christopher Shaw and Mungo Smith, developed areas of expertise in strategic medical planning, research and design – particularly in HTMs, HBNs and NHS Design Guidance Notes. This deep seeded commitment to evidence based design underpins the methodical research practices that run through MA today. As part of our ongoing dedication, we sponsor the Research Award for the International Academy of Design and Health.

Over two decades, we have led the design of over 147 consultancy projects, 48 new build and 94 refurbishment projects, exclusively in healthcare. Our buildings continue to attract international interest for their improved clinical outcomes, use of natural daylight and ventilation and integration of therapeutic gardens. Our roots in research and innovation have maintained a 20 year on-going relationship with the National Health Service. Working with the Department of Health Estates and Facilities Division, on the preparation of numerous health building notes, health technical manuals and guidance documents for acute hospital ward design, primary care centres and mental health facilities.
