Chief Operating Officer (6 month contract)

The demand for new housing has outstripped supply for many, many years. Do you hold the view that current strategy, planning and construction methods will continue to exacerbate this problem? Do you share our assessment that the housing market needs to harness new innovative ideas and only by disrupting existing thinking will we meet the housing challenge? We do, and as such have launched a new charity MOBI (Ministry of Building Innovation) to meet modern housing needs.

MOBI has been created by George Clarke (Channel 4’s ‘Restoration Man’) to make a significant and lasting difference to the supply of new homes in the UK, particularly for young people and for those on low incomes. MOBI believe in the need to invest in the people, products and production needed to develop new homes fit for 21st Century living. We have three main strands to achieving this:

  • People – to address the national construction skills shortage by creating a learning community through investment in new academic and vocational training, geared to the design and production of new housing solutions
  • Products – to undertake research into innovative designs for new homes that integrates the disciplines of architecture, science, technology, engineering, economics and social sciences
  • Production – to take the best designs and develop systems for factory-based off-site production to increase the speed of construction, improve quality and reduce costs

The first manifestation of MOBI, courses at Tee-side University, was launched on May 10th – see attached for more details. We have also already started work with partners.

To take the charity forward we are now looking for a C-level executive who has experience of setting up a charity/non-profit. You will be tasked with completing the registration of MOBI as a registered charity and ensuring that all of the necessary reporting and governance protocols for the successful establishment and running of a charity are in place. You will communicate the progress of key goals and ensure that longer terms plans are developing, with trustees and stakeholders.

You will be a senior professional who has held a commercial role ideally within the property/construction/real estate/architecture sector. If you have a real passion about housing and the problems we are looking to solve we would consider your application if you possess a track record in setting up a non-profit, albeit without specific housing sector experience. You will also be a strong networker, and be at ease meeting and influencing senior stakeholders within both industry and politics. As a start-up you will be expected to “roll up your sleeves” and take responsibility for delivering key milestones.

This COO role is offered on a six-month basis initially. Ideally we are looking for someone who shares the same passion as the trustees, who will want to see this project through the long term and lead the charity to disrupt the housing supply market. However we will also consider an interim who will help with the set-up of the charity before passing it to a newly appointed CEO.

Places for People are a founding supporter of the charity and are co-ordinating this recruitment process through their Head of Recruitment, Neil Pollington. If you have any queries please call him on 01772 897247. Applications can be made online by simply uploading a CV and adding a supporting statement detailing why we should appoint you to this position.
