Principal Sustainability and Climate Change Officer

Salary Range: £46,536 - £48,576

Hackney Council is looking for a Principal Sustainability and Climate Change officer to lead on all planning and policy related environmental sustainability and climate change issues.

Hackney has a dense and complex built environment and we are committed to reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable development for the benefit of Hackney’s communities. Therefore, we are looking for someone with ambition, creativity and commitment to ensure that new development in the borough is designed to meet the highest environmental standards.

As Principal Sustainability and Climate Change Officer you will lead in the active and continuous promotion of best practice that embeds sustainability and energy efficiency at the heart of the planning process. You will participate in guidance and policy making and negotiate positive design changes as part of the development management process. In particular, you will take a leading role on technical responses to planning application submissions, negotiating with developers with an awareness of the competing pressures that inevitably shape development in London. You will also lead on monitoring the collection of Carbon Offset Fund contributions and on the assessment of bids for the allocation of the fund towards carbon reduction projects across the borough. The role will also include opportunities for cross working with other parts of the council and partner organisations to tackle climate change.

The successful candidate must have an analytical approach to working, excellent organisational skills and exceptional written and oral communication skills that can influence to a senior level. You will have a relevant post-graduate qualification and ideally experience of working in a similar role in a local planning authority or planning/built environment related role.

Hackney is one of the UK’s highest performing local authorities, serving one of London’s best places to live and work. We have achieved a huge amount: our services, our schools, our public spaces are all amongst the very best. We have changed the reputation, not just of the Council, but of Hackney itself. Bringing jobs and investment into the borough, securing the legacy from the 2012 Games, and making this a place of which we can all be proud.

If you want to work in a place where you can represent our values so we achieve the best for our residents, please click on the apply button below.

The recruitment process is anonymous. Therefore, we do not accept supporting statements or CVs.

When applying, there will be a number of questions relating to the post on the application form. It is essential that you complete the application questions, responding to each using examples of your skills, knowledge and experience.

Closing date for applications: 06 February 2022

Interview date: W/c 14 February 2022

We are also working towards our vision, which is to be a place for everyone; where residents and staff can be proud; a place that celebrates diversity and where everyone can feel valued, included and involved. In order to achieve this, we look for people who are: Proud; Ambitious; Pioneering; Open; Proactive; Inclusive.
