Sustainability Manager - Full time - hybrid working


Hays Property and Surveying are in partnership with a public sector organisation based in Oxfordshire who are looking to appoint an Sustainability Manager.

The role:

You will be the lead specialist and co-ordinate a wide approach to energy and environmental issues. Responsible for working across the organisation with the Estates and Logistics teams, Directorates and external organisations to ensure compliance with all environmental legislation, codes of practice and guidance.

Responsible for the development, implementation and maintenance of the Green Plan, Climate Change Adaptation Plan, Net Zero Carbon Strategy and Energy Policy. Thereby identifying and reducing the residual risk to which the organisation is exposed to over Environmental Management, Energy Performance, Conservation and Carbon Emissions Trading issues.

To be the organisations direct link with national regulatory bodies including Defra, the Carbon Trust and the Environment Agency and to have specific responsibility for ensuring that the organisation recognises and addresses all of its statutory environmental and other obligations.

To provide expert specialist and professional advice to identify and deliver improvements in the organisations energy and environmental performance / carbon footprint, by the cost-effective purchase of utility supplies and the implementation of energy saving technology wherever practicable. Initiating schemes / bids / business cases for obtaining local and central funding and project managing from initiation to completion of single or multiple schemes.

To promote a wide Sustainable Environment culture in the operation and construction of the Estate and its Corporate activities and responsibilities ensuring the achievement of all Energy and environmental targets. To represent the organisation, locally, regionally and nationally where appropriate or where requested in respect of the overall sustainability agenda.

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Demonstrable experience as a Sustainability Manager
  • Experience in budget management and control
  • Demonstrable experience in Risk Management
  • Management of environmental/energy projects. Using multi-disciplined project teams including in house staff and external Consultants
  • Project management methodology & contracts
  • Specialist knowledge of Legislation, relating to environmental and property management of Healthcare Buildings
  • Energy Saving techniques and controls and legislation
  • Proven ability to manage teams
  • Knowledge and experience of procurement and tendering for specialist advice or services including the OJEU process
  • Experience of collation, analysis and dissemination of information or data.

Qualification and Training:

  • Degree or equivalent in an environmental or energy related discipline or an appropriate equivalent or experience to Msc. or equivalent
  • Professional membership of one of the following: IEMA, RICS, IWFM, I CIBSE or equivalent environmental management institute

  • Very good interpersonal and verbal communication, including presentation and facilitation skills.
  • Able to build and secure credibility with colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Able to engage, motivate and develop others.
  • Able to prioritise conflicting demands.
  • Able to deliver training programmes related to subject matter expertise
  • Good written skills, able to structure a large document and/or prepare a concise and persuasive argument.
  • Able to build strategic relationships and work collaboratively across the organisation.
  • Able to anticipate risks or issues and develop appropriate management plans.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality.
  • Demonstrates adaptable, flexible and positive approach to change.
