Job Details

Your new company

My client is an excellency focussed, employee-owned SME with a flat hierarchy that drives success. They have two main departments: environmental consultancy and software development [water]. They have a distinctive opportunity for an ambitious and collaborative individual to develop and progress their career as a Principal Water Quality Modeller.

Your new role

This role would be ideal for an experienced candidate that enjoys conducting water quality assessments and is now looking to step their career up a level to lead on water quality modelling in a small and successful employee-owned business.

Working closely with their software development team, you will play a key role in the development of a new water quality modelling tool, expanding their best practice for a new hydrological modelling online software. They believe that it is the exchange and challenging of ideas between colleagues that drives us to continually improve our products, so a collaborative mindset is key.

You will be working with scientists at UKCEH, the EA and prestigious universities in the UK. The project is focused on understanding the link between the sources of chemical pollutants and their pathways, fate, and ecological impacts in freshwater ecosystems. Their tool is used as a best practice tool for the estimation of flows in ungauged catchments by the EA, NRW, SEPA, NIEA, EPA and UK water companies. The estimation of climate change adjusted flows will be implemented this year through an EA, NRW and SEPA joint funded project. This new tool will be based on a water quality modelling extension to the predecessor that has been used extensively by UKCEH over the past 20 years to model the fate of various chemicals such as pharmaceuticals and nanoparticles across the UK, including an assessment of SARS-CoV-2 loads across UK river catchments.

What you\'ll need to succeed

  • Good first degree (upper second or higher) in a numerate discipline and ideally be chartered with CIWEM or IEMA.
  • Track record of delivering high quality models using various systems.
  • Understanding of the inner workings of modelling software.
  • Ability to manage a large workload effectively.
  • Able to understand strategic business needs.
  • Experience representing a company as a technical specialist.
  • Be fully conversant with the regulatory framework that underpins your work.

What you\'ll get in return

Successful performance in this role would lead to enhanced discretionary bonus and promotion to Technical Director within 3 years, or less for those with more extensive experience.

  • £40,000 - £50,000 p/annum
  • Remote working arrangements available.
  • 5% matched pension contributions
  • Generous 40.5 day leave entitlement and tax-free bonus entitlement, staff may trade in up to 10 days annual leave for increased salary or purchase up to 10 days of additional annual leave.
  • Flexible working options - hours and locations.
  • Staff are encouraged to take an annual 'Environment Day' to support environmental or educational volunteering projects.
  • As an employee-owned trust, they provide tax-free bonuses to all staff and operate a separate performance-related bonus scheme. Distribution of bonus is dependent on achieving a minimum profit level.
  • Cycle to Work scheme.
  • Medicash health plan offering a wide variety of benefits including cashback on your everyday healthcare treatments, checks and therapies, access to a virtual GP and face to face counselling.
  • They have a formal appraisal system matched by personal development plans and each member of staff has access to 5 days every year for targeted training and professional development.
  • They provide financial support for our staff in gaining professional membership of the appropriate body.
  • The office is a Grade II listed building located in a leafy and tranquil business park with an on-site restaurant, decent coffee, and excellent transport links to nearby cities. On-site sports facilities include table-tennis, tennis, and canoeing, while the nearby Chilterns are criss-crossed with walking and cycling trails.
  • Through their affiliation with the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology there is the direct opportunity to interact with leading scientists within their fields and to contribute to the further development of models and methods deployed within our software products.
  • A good IT infrastructure is essential to their operations as project teams commonly operate out of several offices. They have shared computing infrastructure across all offices and access to high speed GIS and modelling. They reserve a computing budget for each staff member to ensure that all staff have access to the latest modelling and software tools required for their work.
